Ageing; The Teenage Years

Ageing

We either live in denial.

No, not me. I’m not getting old and I’m certainly not ready to retire!

Or, we live for the process of self expression. Like teenagers who express themselves, over 50’s have looped in full circle.

Who am I? What is my purpose?

Self-expression; the process of conveying one’s thoughts, feelings, and individuality through words, actions, or creativity. It’s a way of showcasing who we are and what we believe in. For teenagers, self-expression is especially important as they navigate the journey of forming their identity.

After listening to everyone’s thoughts, ponderings and watching actions this past while, I conject that ageing adults, living their fullest life, are similar in their outlook to that of a teenager.

Teenagers express themselves in diverse ways, reflecting their unique personalities, cultural backgrounds, and experiences.

Over 50s are doing EXACTLY the same.

Both groups seek authenticity in their expressions, whether through personal style or community involvement. It’s true though that each generation adapts to changing societal norms while maintaining core values that resonate with their identity.

For instance, some might choose fashion as a form of self-expression, wearing clothes that resonate with their mood or personal taste. Those over 50 often embrace timeless fashion while incorporating modern trends that reflect their personality.

Others may express themselves through music, whether by creating playlists that mirror their emotions or by learning an instrument to channel their creativity.

Others use art.

Social media is another key outlet for self-expression, where teens often share their views, art, or personal stories. Over 50’s (start campaigns) use local activism or online campaigns to foster a sense of belonging and purpose.

Art, writing, sports, and even the choice of friendships are further ways in which people express who they are, highlighting the wide spectrum of how self-expression manifests.

By celebrating the unique ways each group shares their voice, we can create a more inclusive society that values all forms of self-expression.

It’s a topic to be explored.
