Sailing History: A Day Aboard Brindabella

There are days that catch the light just right… when the breeze is steady, the sea is calm, and history meets the horizon.

This was one of those days.

We had the absolute pleasure of joining a charity sail aboard Brindabella, Australia’s iconic maxi yacht, departing from the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron. With a full deck and a crowd of smiling guests, we skimmed across the water under a flawless autumn sky.

Gratitude to Zenya for the invitation as it was an unforgettable experience.

If you know your yachts, Brindabella needs no introduction. Designed by Scott Jutson and built by Boatspeed in the early ’90s, this vessel was famously sketched on the back of a beer coaster at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. She went on to dominate the Sydney to Hobart in the 1990s and has since become a favourite on the Australian regatta scene, having welcomed more than 500 crew over her lifetime.

Now owned and lovingly operated by Johnny Hilhorst and Brigid Dighton, Brindabella is more than a legacy vessel—she’s a living, sailing experience. Recognised by the Australian Maritime Museum for her historical significance, she continues to inspire awe as she cuts through the waves with the same grace and speed that made her a legend.

Today, Brindabella is available for private charters, group bookings, and special events. She can accommodate up to 36 guests and offers everything from day sails to overnight adventures.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-timer, it’s well worth it.
