Are you a just-in-case packer?

When I pack to go on holidays, there are two categories I sort by. Necessities like passport, visa, smalls, toothbrush, etc and the just-in-case ‘stuff’.

My husband admits to never packing just in case items; antiseptic hand wipes(eye roll); tiger balm (impatient sigh); a coffee keep-cup (resigned shrug) or recently, an umbrella. (What do we need an umbrella for, it’s not going to rain?) Newsflash: it rained: a tropical downpour.

I never forget that extra pair of shoes (can’t ever have too many shoes!) and two or…three… or four extra changes of clothes just in case of aforementioned rain or falling overboard. But that’s a story for another time.

And my just-in-case pile will never be without a travel cutlery set and metal straw, just in case dish washing seems a little dodgy in places. (Ok, no audible sounds of annoyance at that one!).

A friend of mine travels extensively and for domestic travel has no more than 7kg of luggage plus his laptop. International is 13kg. He hasn’t checked in luggage since his marriage ended ten years ago! I shake my head at his discipline, but it drives be crazy wondering what he could possibly have not-packed.

Now to decide my just-in-case items for our next holiday, any hints for me? Although I suppose I need to decide on a destination first.

And despite his groans and grimaces I know my husband is always secretly grateful that I do actually pack just-in-case stuff he might need.

Yes dear husband of mine, this is why my luggage is always heavier than yours.

FROM THE EDITOR
While some companions may roll their eyes at the backup scarf, extra socks, or that herbal balm you always swear by, these are the things that can turn a travel hiccup into a breeze. Because let’s face it, after a certain age, we’ve earned the right to be ready for anything: a sudden shower, a surprise detour, or a restaurant with less-than-convincing hygiene. Travel light if you must, but travel wise. A compact first-aid kit, copies of travel documents, and a spare pair of reading glasses can go a long way. And if your suitcase tips the scales slightly more than your travel companion’s? So be it.

Destination? That can come later for sure Bel. But your peace of mind – and theirs – starts with that well-packed bag.
