National Volunteer Week in Australia is held from Monday, 19 May to Sunday, 25 May 2025. The 2025 theme is “Connecting Communities”, celebrating the spirit of connection and the impact volunteers have on building strong communities.
Did you know that organisations are struggling to attract younger volunteers? It’s been a conversation floating through the community whispers for a while. While those of us over 50 think it’s “normal” to do something – especially when you retire – the impetus to volunteer from a younger age is dwindling. It makes this writer a little concerned for future generations. We won’t dwell for now – we will CELEBRATE those who already volunteer!
The knowns of volunteering include improving mental and physical wellbeing, reducing feelings of loneliness, and providing purpose and structure. Volunteering provides a fulfilling outlet for giving back and making a difference, which can be incredibly satisfying.
There are more than 1 million volunteers each year around the world, according to a study and they say there are four key elements of volunteerism: selflessness, sacrifice, service, and support. Volunteering can also benefit you personally as it offers the chance to:
- act on your values, passions and interests
- create professional networks
- gain work experience and learn new skills
- enjoy new cultural experiences
- and build your confidence!
But did you know Volunteering with an approved organisation can also help you meet Centrelink’s mutual obligation requirements? You can fulfill this requirement by completing 30 hours per fortnight of approved voluntary work. You need to volunteer with an organisation that is approved by Centrelink but you may be able to receive reimbursements, allowances, or honoraria for some expenses related to your volunteering.
Locally, organisations such as SKER (Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue) are included in this scheme. Give them a shout if this interests you. (If you are a NFP – you must be able to declare that you meet the requirements of an approved voluntary work organisation)

These days, age no longer determines everything we do. We preach it.
If you want to pitch in and do something socially worthwhile, you absolutely can.
After a lifetime of work you may have developed some extraordinary skills. While many can plant a tree, not everyone can build a website, design a road or wire a house for electricity. Or run a social media platform for over 50’s called GreyMatter. Yes, this is volunteer led due to personal passions and interests. Our contributors are as well.
Thank you Robert, Anne, Rick and Bel for your contributions, thoughts and inspirations.
Now, let’s promote who YOU volunteer with. Write in the comments to share the organisation or volunteering “thing” that you do!
