Life on the Move: Working, Wandering, and Making It Work

After decades of clocking up frequent flyer miles for work, Gerry and Corinne have swapped airport lounges for open roads. What started as a few short trips together in late 2024 is now building towards a bigger dream — going full-time on the road from July 2028. Until then, they’re testing the waters (and the wheel bearings) with a series of adventures that combine work commitments with off-grid escapes. Their latest itinerary? Six weeks through Broken Hill, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast — all while staying connected, meeting deadlines, and making the most of life between destinations.

Here’s their first chapter.

Working on the road. Doable or not?

After Covid, working from home became much easier and acceptable. After many years of flying around the world for work, it is time to change it up.

Corinne and I have been travelling on our own for a while now, enjoying what Australia has to offer.

Our paths crossed in December 2024, and we have done a few shortish trips on the road together.

After working out what we need to do to stay on the road for a while, we are nearly ready to hit the road a bit longer and full time from July 2028 onwards. Due to certain commitments.

We are planning 10 days at Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill, off grid of course. Then down to Melbourne to see the Grandkids, up to the Gold Coast for a Lions Event, the Sunshine Coast for a break and back to Broken Hill for the Outback Spiritual Festival. 6 Weeks on the Road, doesn’t sound long, but it could be challenging while still working as well.

There are so many things to consider, and be prepared for, even for shorter trips.

We will try and give you a heads up of how we are going on our upcoming road trips while still working.

We did a quick trip to Queensland a few months ago, with only a week to prepare.
Was the caravan roadworthy and the wheel bearings checked. Yes and No the bearings weren’t checked. Went to the local tire place and said we leaving next Wednesday can you fit me in. After some sweet talking got it booked in for the Monday.

Guess what, if we didn’t get it looked at, we would not have made it. The previous service had one of the bearings replaced the wrong way round. $300 later it was fixed and we made it back home without any incidents.

We are about to leave on our next adventure.

Wheel Bearings done – yes, may pick up another set on the way.

Water filled.

Clothes packed. ps, I keep a separate set of clothes in the van, then wash and put back. Can help with unplanned short trips!

Food loaded. Probably too much, half it will come back unused. Buy fresh as you go and support the locals.

  • Gas bottles filed
  • Starlink updated and checked
  • Power cables loaded
  • Caravan batteries charged and checked
  • Solar all working
  • Firewood etc loaded
  • Diesel Heater checked

Any Meds and supplements if you need; enough for time away, plus a bit more.

Work stuff up to date and ready to go.. as best as can be…

Laptop, monitor, mouse keyboard back up drive, usb stick software updates done…

Dogs.

Ah, yes, what to do with the dogs. Shall we take them or leave them behind. We have a choice, we have a young girl who will house and dog sit for six weeks, but we can take them as well.. Decided to leave them home this trip.

Bills, make sure you get them online otherwise they won’t get paid.

The most important while away is to have some sort of routine. ie work needs to be done, I prefer mornings and try and clear most of what I can.

We leave mid-morning to avoid the creatures on the road and pull over by 4 at the latest.

Have a few prepared meals to make life easier, and then ‘see what happens’ kicks in.

Update to follow in a week or so
Gerry and Corinne…
