While the exact origins are not definitively clear, Hagen’s quote is widely credited as the source of the popular idiom.

The phrase gained more popularity in the 1970s, with Mac Davis releasing a song titled “Stop and Smell the Roses” in 1974[3][6], further cementing the expression in popular culture.
