Retiring hairdressers

Finding the Right New Stylist

Who understands the heartbreak of a retiring hairdresser? When we’ve had the same stylist for years, losing them can feel like losing a trusted friend.

Let’s be honest, many of them are friends.

But while they may be hanging up their scissors, our hair isn’t going anywhere. So, how do we find someone new?

Start Where You Are
If your current salon has other stylists, ask if there’s someone they’d recommend. An up-and-coming talent might be a perfect fit. But if your hairdresser was a sole practitioner, you’ll need to explore new options.

Scouting the Right Salon
Before committing, do a little research. Check out a salon’s Instagram or Facebook page to what styles they showcase. If it’s all long, beachy waves and you’re rocking a chic pixie cut, it may not be the right place for you.

Test the Waters
Book a simple “refresher” cut and blow-dry first. This lets you experience the salon’s atmosphere. Is the lighting flattering? Is the music soothing or too loud? Most importantly, does the stylist listen to you? It’s also a great way to gauge pricing before committing to a major cut or color.

Trust the Process
No one will replace your longtime hairdresser overnight, good relationships take time. But if you’re happy with the experience and the cut, give them a second shot. If it doesn’t feel right, trust your gut and keep looking.

Finding a new stylist is an adjustment, but with a little patience and an open mind, you’ll land in good hands.

Good luck!
