Perseverance

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.” – Walter Elliot

Walter Elliot, a Scottish politician from about 100 years ago, highlights the true nature of perseverance – a series of determined efforts strung together.

It’s good to get up every day and keep going!

Keep on keeping on – until the clock stops.

Older individuals can exhibit a range of attitudes toward perseverance, influenced by factors like perceived opportunities for change, beliefs about the value of effort, and personal experiences.

Some older adults maintain a strong commitment, while others may experience decreased motivation or find it more challenging to persevere due to perceived (real or not) limitations.

A positive attitude can be associated with better mental and physical health outcomes. Conversely, negative perceptions may predict the onset and persistence of depression and anxiety.

It’s crucial to remember that older adults are not a monolithic group. Individual differences in personality, health, social support, and life experiences play a significant role in shaping their attitudes towards perseverance – and their attitude to being told to “keep on keeping on”.
