Still Becoming: Gerry

To continue the campaign with a twist, as we move into Active Ageing Week, which continues to challenge ageist stereotypes to promote physical, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, vocational, and environmental well-being… let’s look at Gerry.

Gerry is a go getter.

He’s an ideas man.

He is action orientated.

If you need something done, ask Gerry.

He keeps physically active through his many pursuits, however having started the Copper Trail parkrun near Kadina/Wallaroo โ€“ it’s a reminder that staying engaged can take many forms; he completes the run, along with everyone else.

Getting older hasnโ€™t slowed Gerry down. Still working, keeping up with technology and preparing to become a District Governor in Lions International, Gerry recently completed an intensive four-day leadership training course, with the goal of becoming a globally approved Lions trainer.

Gerry’s approach to life is refreshingly simple: work smarter, embrace change and make time for what matters.

Beyond leadership and service, there is a bigger ambition โ€“ to live a happy, eventful life, appreciate family and become the kind of grandparent whose stories and memories stay with the grandchildren forever.

Gerry’s advice for ageing well?

Look after your body and mind, remember the past, embrace today and look towards the future with positivity.

Gerry’s still becoming โ€“ with the District Governor role ahead, it’s a big new step to look forward to.

This is part of the GreyMatter International Day of Older Persons on 1 October campaign. Who are you becoming?

For International Day of Older Persons on 1 October, GreyMatter is asking people a simple question: Who are you becoming?

Becoming isn’t about adding more to ourselves, it can also be about letting go of the expectations. The should haves, and could ofs, or the versions of ourselves we thought we had to be, then discovering there is still so much life left to live!!

Still becoming.

This campaign will run for the Day of Older Person and Active Ageing Week.

1. What is something new youโ€™ve taken up, learned, or explored recently that would have surprised your younger self?
2. When you look at where you are today, what is a chapter of your life story that people might not expect just by looking at your age?
3. What is a project, passion, or goal youโ€™re actively focused on right now, and whatโ€™s driving your excitement for it?
4. How has your definition of purpose or meaningful work shifted over time, and what keeps you feeling connected and useful today?
5. If you could share one piece of wisdom with someone worrying about getting older, what would you tell them about the value of the perspective you have now?
