Is Instagram eating your captions?

What to do if your carefully written Instagram content disappears after you hit publish.

If you’ve ever written a carefully crafted Instagram caption, checked it, pressed OK, published your post and then discovered the caption has simply vanished, you’re apparently not alone.

We’ve been looking into this after experiencing the problem on @greymatterstudiolife, and there are enough reports from other Instagram users to suggest this may be a genuine platform issue rather than user error. Phew.

The particularly frustrating part is that the post itself publishes normally. Your photograph or video is there. Instagram appears to accept your caption. You move on, assuming everything is fine.

Except it isn’t.

The caption has disappeared.

What appears to be happening?

Reports throughout 2026 describe Instagram publishing the media successfully but failing to attach the caption to the published post.

One technical report has referred to the problem as “CAPTION_NOT_ATTACHED” — essentially, the content publishes but the caption doesn’t successfully make the journey from Instagram’s composer to the finished post.

There have also been reports from professional and business accounts experiencing the problem.

That doesn’t necessarily mean every affected account has the same underlying cause. Instagram is a complex ecosystem and bugs can be account-, app- or server-specific.

But the pattern is worth knowing about.

The first thing to do: check the live post

If you’ve just published something important, don’t immediately close Instagram and move on.

Open the published post and check it.

Is the caption actually there?

If it isn’t, don’t panic.

One workaround reported by users is to:

1. Open the published post.
2. Select Edit.
3. Remove the caption.
4. Save the post.
5. Go back into Edit.
6. Paste the caption back in.
7. Save again.
8. Check the live post.

For some users, the caption then remains attached.

Keep a copy of your caption

Until the problem settles, this is probably the most practical piece of advice.

If your Instagram caption contains original writing, business information, links, credits, quotes or carefully researched content, keep a copy outside Instagram until you’ve checked the published post.

For GreyMatter, that’s particularly important because our captions often form part of the editorial storytelling around an article or person’s story.

Losing the caption isn’t just inconvenient. It can mean losing the context of the post.

Try a simple test

If this keeps happening, create a very basic test post.

Something like:

Instagram caption test — October 2026.

No hashtags. No mentions. No links. No elaborate formatting.

Publish it and check whether the caption survives.

If even that disappears, you’ve got useful evidence that the problem isn’t the wording of your particular post.

If the simple caption works but a longer caption doesn’t, then it’s worth investigating the formatting, length, mentions, hashtags or other elements in the original content.

Don’t assume you’ve done something wrong

This is probably the biggest takeaway.

When technology behaves unpredictably, our first instinct can be to assume we’ve missed a setting or pressed the wrong button.

Sometimes the platform is simply having a bad day.

And for small businesses, creators, community organisations and independent publishers, these little glitches can have a disproportionate impact.

We spend time creating the content. We publish it. We assume the job is done.

It isn’t necessarily done until we’ve checked the live post.

Our temporary GreyMatter workflow

For now, we’re treating Instagram publishing as a two-step process:

PUBLISH → CHECK THE LIVE POST

And we’re keeping the original caption until we’ve confirmed that Instagram has actually published it.

It’s not glamorous. But it is good digital housekeeping.

If you’re experiencing the same problem, you’re certainly not the only one and knowing that can save a lot of unnecessary frustration.

Have you had an Instagram caption disappear after publishing?

Let us know. The more people documenting these glitches, the easier it is to distinguish a genuine platform problem from something happening at an individual account level.
